SUMMARY:Colloquium with Simon Stael (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences\, Uppsala)
DESCRIPTION:On 9 October 2026\, Simon Stael (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences\, Uppsala) will present insights to his current research as part of the SNP2Prot Colloquium Series. \nSpeaker: Simon Stael (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences\, Uppsala)Title: A chloroplast-endoplasmic reticulum axis underpins light-dependent calcium homeostasis \nDate: Friday\, 9 October 2026Time: 14:00 pmLocation: Lecture hall BIOLOGICUM green house\, Weinbergweg 22\, 06120 Halle (Saale) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract: \nLight is a central determinant of plant growth\, development\, and environmental acclimation. Therefore\, plants continuously monitor both the external light environment and the physiological consequences of light absorption. These inputs are conveyed through two interconnected pathways: photoreceptors\, which report light intensity\, wavelength\, and direction\, and photosynthesis\, which reports the internal physiological state of the cell. Photoreceptor-dependent calcium signaling has been studied predominantly in the cytosol and nucleus\, where it links light perception to transcriptional and developmental responses. By contrast\, the contribution of organellar calcium dynamics remains less well understood\, particularly that of chloroplasts\, the primary site of photosynthesis. Chloroplasts are in essence light-driven proton pumps and because calcium transport is often closely coupled to proton fluxes in plants\, chloroplast calcium dynamics are likely to have broader signaling functions than previously appreciated. Our recent observations indicate that chloroplast and endoplasmic reticulum calcium pools are functionally connected [1\,2]. This raises the possibility that light-dependent chloroplast calcium fluxes extend beyond the organelle itself to influence cellular calcium homeostasis. Such a view challenges the traditional notion of the chloroplast as a largely autonomous compartment and instead places it within an integrated intracellular signaling network. In this presentation\, I will discuss calcium dynamics under different light regimes\, with particular emphasis on photosynthesis-dependent proton transport\, chloroplast–ER interactions\, and the contrasting calcium signatures observed between photosynthetic tissues and non-photosynthetic tissues such as roots. Together\, these observations suggest that chloroplasts act not only as sites of photosynthesis\, but also as central coordinators of light-responsive calcium signaling with broad implications for plant physiology. \n\nGrenzi M\, Orlando Marchesano BM\, Parmagnani AS\, Buratti S\, Ricci N\, Luoni L\, Nieves-Cordones M\, Bonza MC\, Stael S\, Costa A.
