SUMMARY:Workshop - Good Scientific Practice
DESCRIPTION:For all researchers\, acting in accordance with the principles of good scientific practice is fundamentally essential. In its preamble\, the DFG’s Guidelines for Safeguarding Good Scientific Practice state: ‘Scientific integrity forms the basis of trustworthy research.’ Therefore\, a workshop aimed at deepening existing knowledge on this topic is one of the first obligatory elements of the IRTG-PROTEOFORuM. In this workshop\, you will learn what scientific integrity and scientific misconduct mean\, as well as about the gray areas between these two extremes. \nTrainer: Michael Schöner \n\n\n\n\nDate: Wednesday & Thursday\, 25 & 26 June 2025\nTime: 9 am – 1 pm\nLocation: Online \n\n\n\nRegister here!\n\n\n\nAlternative date option: 12 & 15 May 2025 –> \n\nDay 1: What does acting in accordance with good scientific practice mean? What are involved stakeholders? \nAfter a brief historical outline\, participants are given an overview of the most important national and international regulations for compliance with good scientific practice and learn about the statutes specific to the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and the existing ombud system. Moreover\, the participants will interactively work on questions related to handling research data\, how to deal with problems concerning supervision and conflicts in academia. The workshop aims at reflecting on how we conduct science and which strategies we can develop in dilemma situations with regard to good scientific practice. \nDay 2: Who may appear as an author on a publication? What guidelines and recommendations are there and what do they say? Where are the grey areas? Who can help me? \n‘An author is an individual who has made a genuine\, identifiable contribution to the content of a research publication of text\, data or software.‘ (Guideline 14 of the DFG Code of Conduct Guidelines for Safeguarding Good Research Practice). This could say it all. In reality\, however\, the situation is often more complex. Especially in the early academic career phase\, your own situation with regard to questions of authorship is often characterized by a lack of experience\, uncertainty and dependencies. This workshop is intended to help you gain better clarity about the current regulations\, rights and obligations in the area of ‘publication and authorship’\, to become aware of the grey areas and to find out where you can turn to in case of questions and violations of scientific integrity. The workshop also includes a discussion on scientific writing in times of AI. \n\nThe number of participants in the workshop is limited to 20 participants. \nThe event is specifically organized for doctoral candidates and postdocs of the PROTEOFORuM. PhD students of Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg are welcome to take part if free spots are available. \n  \nRegistration is open until 30 April 2025: Register here! \n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Excursion to the exhibition “Planetary Peasants” at Kunstmuseum Moritzburg
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, 11 September 2025\nTime: 3 pm – 5 pm\nLocation: Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle (Saale)\, Friedemann-Bach-Platz 5\, 06108 Halle (Saale) \nIn 2025\, the end of the German Peasants’ War marks its 500th anniversary. This serves as the occasion for a contemporary artistic exploration. Based on the conditions and unresolved questions of the historical events\, the project examines the state of globalized agriculture\, the realities of farmers’ lives today\, and the relevance of the demands made in 1525. \nThe exhibition Planetary Peasants\, a collaboration between the Kulturstiftung Sachsen-Anhalt and Werkleitz\, presents 30 contemporary artistic positions from May 23 to September 14\, 2025\, at Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle (Saale). Internationally active artists and collectives are invited to develop new works during a residency in Saxony-Anhalt or to expand existing works site-specifically. Their projects explore the production conditions and emancipatory potential of today’s agricultural practices while addressing societal issues and challenges that led to the Peasants’ War 500 years ago—many of which remain relevant in different societies worldwide today.\nhttps://planetarische-bauern.werkleitz.de/en/planetarische-bauern-ausstellung-2025 \nSNP2Prot invites you to join us for an inspiring afternoon at Kunstmuseum Moritzburg on Thursday\, 11 September 2025 at 3 pm. \nAfter a guided tour (in English) of the exhibition\, you’re welcome to explore further on your own or to join us for a relaxed coffee and conversation at a café nearby. \n@SNP2Prot members: Interested in broadening your plant science horizon? SUMMARY:Colloquium with Stephanie Hutin (Centre national de la recherche scientifique\, Grenoble FR)
DESCRIPTION:On 28 October 2025\, Stephanie Hutin (Centre national de la recherche scientifique\, LPCV\, Grenoble FR) will present insights to her current research as part of the SNP2Prot Colloquium Series. \n\nSpeaker: Stephanie Hutin (Centre national de la recherche scientifique\, LPCV\, Grenoble FR)\nTitle: Liquid Logic of Temperature Sensing: Phase Separation of the Thermosensor ELF3 \nDate: Tuesday\, 28 October 2025\nTime: 12:30 pm\nLocation: Lecture hall (GHS) of Biochemistry\, Kurt-Mothes-Straße 3 (Weinberg Campus)\, 06120 Halle (Saale) \n\nAbstract: Sensitive and finely tuned temperature sensing and response mechanisms are essential for plant growth\, development\, and reproduction. As global temperatures rise and extreme weather events become more frequent\, understanding how plants perceive and respond to heat is increasingly critical for food security. Recent studies\, including our own\, have revealed an emerging paradigm in cellular regulation: biomolecular condensation—the phase separation of proteins and nucleic acids into dynamic\, membraneless compartments that can rapidly respond to environmental cues. Yet\, how these condensates form and how their biophysical properties translate into functional outcomes in vivo remain poorly understood. \nIn this talk\, I will present our work on the temperature-responsive condensation of the developmental regulator EARLY FLOWERING 3 (ELF3)\, a key component of the plant circadian clock and thermoresponsive pathway. We dissect the role of its prion-like domain (PrLD)\, showing that it forms a monodisperse higher-order oligomer in the dilute phase and undergoes temperature-sensitive phase separation. Polyglutamine (polyQ) tracts within the PrLD fine-tune this temperature response but are not essential for condensation. Upon aging\, the condensates transition into a hydrogel-like state with semi-ordered architecture\, as revealed through an integrated suite of structural and biophysical techniques\, including fluorescence and atomic force microscopy\, small-angle scattering\, electron microscopy\, and X-ray diffraction. \nTogether\, these findings reveal a rich structural and dynamic landscape for the ELF3 PrLD and provide an expanded molecular framework for understanding how plants translate temperature cues into developmental responses through biomolecular condensation. \n\n@ECRs: Meet Stephanie Hutin in an exclusive Meet-the-Speaker session directly after her talk in seminar room 200 (Kurt-Mothes-Straße 3). Take the opportunity to talk with her about topics of interest in a pleasant atmosphere enjoying free PIZZA!! \nIf you like to meet with the speaker\, please contact the host\, Marcel Quint. \n\nSee all upcoming SNP2Prot colloquia listed here: https://snp2prot.uni-halle.de/events/category/colloquium/ \nThe SNP2Prot Colloquium Series is integrated to the \n\nHalle Plant Science Colloquium (HPSC) – https://www.landw.uni-halle.de/prof/pflanzenernaehrung/hpsc/\nIPB Seminar Series – https://www.ipb-halle.de/forschung/symposien-und-kolloquien/vortraege/ipb-seminare\n\n\n

SUMMARY:SNP2Prot Retreat 11/25
DESCRIPTION:Date: Monday & Tuesday\, 10 & 11 November 2025\nTime: 8 am – 5 pm\nLocation: Hotel Kloster Nimbschen\, Nimbschener Landstr. 1\, 04668 Grimma \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSchedule: Download v251103 \n\n\n\nRegister here!\n\n\n\nOn Monday and Tuesday\, 10 and 11 November 2025 the SNP2Prot retreat 11/25 will take place at Hotel Kloster Nimbschen\, a wonderful event venue close to the Mulde River built on the grounds of an ancient monastery. During this retreat\, the SNP2Prot community will address two major topics: discussing current project progress and developing effective publication strategies. \nMoreover\, the retreat aims to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration within the entire SNP2Prot team\, develop both joint and individual concepts for future objectives\, and further promote an open and collegial environment. \nDay 1: After the registration and brief welcome\, the retreat will begin with an overview of the current status. This will be followed by a short lecture on how project requirements and objectives may evolve across different phases of interdisciplinary research\, and on the current aims of our consortium. Following this\, PhD candidates and postdocs will share the progress of their projects in short presentations. A key highlight will be group work on joint review papers\, where in small groups PIs will moderate the brainstorming and developing of strategies for writing interdisciplinary review papers. In the evening ‘Helgas Almhütte‘ promises a ‘zünftiges’ (rustic) gathering. \nDay 2: Project presentations will continue\, and SNP2Prot members will learn about the status and concepts of CRC research data management. To further foster interactive scientific exchange\, a poster session will provide an opportunity for each project to present and discuss their ideas for compelling publication strategies. The retreat will conclude with a General Assembly Meeting\, where important updates will be shared and participants can raise questions\, suggestions\, and topics for open discussion. \nAfter these two inspiring days filled with science and social interaction\, (Early Career) Researchers (ECRs) will continue with an ECR-only day on 12 November without the PIs. → Read more: ECR-only day \n  \nWe’re looking forward to a great retreat. \n@SNP2Prot-Team: Please register to attend the event: Register here! \n

SUMMARY:eLabFTW demo session
DESCRIPTION:Currently\, many researchers are interested in establishing electronic lab notebooks in their groups. There are many different software solutions out there (and even a tool to help you compare the different ones: https://eln-finder.ulb.tu-darmstadt.de/home ) but not all of them are free or keep your data saved on-premise where only you can see it. The ITZ provides an MLU-only instance of the free eLabFTW ELN software (https://www.elabftw.net/ ) so we would like to pitch this to you as the potentially most straightforward and easiest approach. Many groups at MLU are already using it. \nAs a starting point\, SNP2Prot and Agri-Explore are happy to invite you to an eLabFTW demo session. \nTrainer: Stephanie Krüger (Biozentrum\, Microscopy Core Facility) and Joshua Kraft (Sinz-lab) \n\n\n\n\nDate: Thursday\, 13 November 2025\nTime: 12 pm – 1 pm\nLocation: Online (Webex) \n\n\n\nRegister here!\n\n\n\n\nTarget group: All level scientists of MLU \nSome additional information: \nStephanie Krüger and Joshua Kraft will present how they are using eLabFTW in their daily research routines — showing their approaches and use cases from labs with diverse needs. Each of them will give a 20-minute presentation\, followed by a 20-minute moderated Q&A session. \nThe goal of this session is to give all interested groups an overview of how eLabFTW can support digital research data management\, and to help you decide whether it might be useful for your own lab. \nIf you are interested\, please register for the Webex meeting here: Register here!

SUMMARY:Colloquium with Anne Claire Conibear (TU Wien\, Austria)
DESCRIPTION:On 18 November 2025\, Anne Claire Conibear (TU Wien\, Austria) will present insights to her current research as part of the SNP2Prot Colloquium Series. \n\nSpeaker: Anne Claire Conibear (TU Wien\, Austria)\nTitle: Posttranslational Modifications of Disordered Proteins \nDate: Tuesday\, 18 November 2025\nTime: 5 pm\nLocation: Lecture hall E.02\, Theodor-Lieser-Strasse 9 (Heide Süd Campus)\, 06120 Halle (Saale) \n\nAbstract: The conformational flexibility of intrinsically disordered proteins and protein regions (IDRs)\, and their accessibility to modifying enzymes make IDRs hot-spots for protein regulation by posttranslational modifications (PTMs). Such PTMs increase the complexity of the proteome and can have central roles in regulating protein function\, location\, interactions and degradation. Little is known\, however\, about how PTMs modulate the conformations and interactions of IDRs\, as they typically occupy multiple conformational states\, have promiscuous interactions\, and are often removed or poorly represented in structural biology studies. In this presentation\, I will discuss our work towards understanding how PTMs modulate the conformations and interactions of IDRs. Protein synthesis and semi-synthesis provides access to site-specifically modified variants of IDRs\, such as the HMGN1 and Tau proteins\, and disordered termini of Hsp90 and β-catenin. These protein variants enable us to study the precise effects of PTMs and cross-talk of multiple PTMs on conformational populations using NMR spectroscopy. With these examples\, I aim to show how integrating chemical protein synthesis with structural biology of IDRs allows us to gain new insights into the effects of PTMs on the conformation\, dynamics and regulation of IDRs. \nReferences:\n[1] Conibear\, A. In Copenhagen\, he leads the Centre of excellence in Ancient Environmental Genomics (CAEG) and the Ancient Environmental Genomics Initiative for Sustainability (AEGIS). He is a professor at both the University of Copenhagen and University of Cambridge. In addition\, he is Excellence Professor at Bremen University\, Germany. \nSpeaker: Eske Willerslev (Director of CAEG at the University of Copenhagen\, DK)\nTitle: The AEGIS project \nDate: Tuesday\, 25 November 2025\nTime: 5 pm\nLocation: Lecture hall E.02\, Theodor-Lieser-Strasse 9 (Heide Süd Campus)\, 06120 Halle (Saale) \n\nAbstract: The Ancient Environmental Genomics Initiative for Sustainability (AEGIS) \nClimate change poses a critical threat to human food security\, and its impacts are forecast by the IPCC to affect agricultural production across much of the globe\, putting a significant proportion of the world’s population at risk of food insecurity\, if not starvation.\nAlthough modern agricultural practices have built cropping systems that maximise yields in today’s climate\, these typically lack genetic and organismal diversity\, require intensive use of chemical fertilisers\, pesticides\, and heavy irrigation\, and have limited resilience to rapid climatic and environmental change. Attempts to meet the coming challenges of food insecurity and ensuring agricultural sustainability are further constrained by the genetically depleted staple crops\, the slow processes of conventional breeding and our poor understanding of organismal interactions and adaptations in both natural and agro-ecosystems. Yet each unique climate cycle\, coupled with human cultivation and plant domestication (starting ~12\,000 years ago)\, produced novel genetic and organismal configurations\, specific for all types of environments\, but not seen since. This has resulted in an almost – infinite number of past species adaptations and ecosystem responses to climate changes in a wide range of natural and human-modified settings. The great majority of the genetic information underpinning these adaptive responses has been lost through evolutionary change. However\, a rich record of those responses survives in the earth over many thousands and millions of years as ancient environmental DNA (eDNA). \nA single gram of sediment contains billions of DNA fragments and other ancient biomolecules\, providing a comprehensive record of the organisms that inhabited the local environment\, including fungi\, bacteria\, viruses\, wild and domesticated plants and animals – even in the complete absence of living organisms or fossil remains. Following analytical developments in eDNA over the last two decades – and concurrent rapid advances in the ability to technically modify crops and their ecosystems – it is in principle feasible to tap into this vast eDNA archive at scale to reliably retrieve genetic and organismal information from the past and use nature’s own solutions to climate change (across time and environments) as a means for improving future food sustainability. \nThis presentation is an introduction to a newly started large-scale project termed Ancient Environmental Genomics Initiative for Sustainability (AEGIS). The vision behind AEGIS is to build a more sustainable and secure food production system while also preserving biodiversity in cropping systems under climate change. To meet its vision\, the 18 institutions behind AEGIS will develop the essential science and methodology to use ancient eDNA – alongside other ancient and modern biomolecule-based approaches – to identify important organismal associations and genetic adaptations in natural and agro-ecosystems that will improve future food security under climate change. \n  \n\nIf you like to meet with the speaker\, please contact the host\, Alain Tissier. \n\nSee all upcoming SNP2Prot colloquia listed here: https://snp2prot.uni-halle.de/events/category/colloquium/ \nThe SNP2Prot Colloquium Series is integrated to the \n\nHalle Plant Science Colloquium (HPSC) – https://www.landw.uni-halle.de/prof/pflanzenernaehrung/hpsc/\nIPB Seminar Series – https://www.ipb-halle.de/forschung/symposien-und-kolloquien/vortraege/ipb-seminare\n\n\n
