The DFG has recently announced the establishment of eight new Schwerpunktprogramme (SPP), set to start in 2026, with a total funding of 55 million euros.
In a highly competitive selection process, the SPP “Künstliche Intelligenz für das Design funktioneller Proteine”, led by Prof. Dr. Jens Meiler at Leipzig University, was chosen as one of only eight funded initiatives out of 53 proposals. It was recognized as a high-quality topic with a remarkable formative effect on its research field.
Over the coming months, the DFG will issue individual calls for each SPP, inviting interested researchers to participate. Submitted project proposals will undergo evaluation based on their scientific quality and contribution to the program’s core theme. Each SPP will receive funding for a total of six years.
This is a fantastic achievement for Jens Meiler, the involved scientists, and the entire research community working at the intersection of AI and protein engineering.
Congratulations to everyone contributing to this success!
