Workshop – Professional Presentations in the Academic World
The workshop ‘Professional Presentations in the Academic World’ supports participants in preparing for presentations of all kinds – such as specialist presentations for conferences, their own disputation or similar events. This workshop will provide you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to present yourself confidently and competently in key scenarios. It will cover a range of topics including expressive behaviour, speaker impact, speech structure and dealing with difficult question.Through theoretical input, numerous exercises and tar- geted (video)feedback, participants are made aware of their own and others’ presentation behaviour and guided to make improvements.
The workshop aims to answer the following questions:
• How do I come across as a speaker?
• How do I come across in terms of body language, voice and choice of words?
• How do I structure and present my content?
• How can I hold the attention of my audience

Contents in Brief:
Day 1 (4 hours) + Individual phase as preparation for the following training day
- The speaker’s expression + Introduction to the background factors of com- munication and presentation techniques + Brief introduction to expression levels and the function of paraverbal (voice) and non-verbal (body) expression
- Structuring presentations for specific audiences of presentations + Target group analysis + Preparing and structuring the content + Guiding the listener and directing attention
- Preparation phase To prepare a presentation, taking into account what has been learnt so far.
Day 2 (4 hours)
- Dealing with the audience / Conversation man- agement and guidance + Motivating and inspiring the audience + Handling difficult and/or provocative questions + Phrasing answers in a structured and professional way
- Exercises with feedback + Targeted exercises on expressive behaviour and the structure of presentations + Reciprocal (video)feedback
The number of participants in the workshop is limited to 12 participants.
The event is specifically organized for doctoral candidates of the graduate programs PROTEOFORuM and AgriPoly II. Doctoral candidates of Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg are welcome to take part if free spots are available.
